Orca and whale cruise

Come and discover the magic of winter in Norway in the Tromso region and the Lyngen Alps! Every winter, from mid-October to the end of January, schools of herring gather in the fjords north of Tromsø, and hundreds of killer whales and humpback whales come to take advantage of this abundance of food. November corresponds to the peak of cetacean activity, giving us some extraordinary sightings, with enough daylight to allow us to make some great shore excursions too.
enough daylight to make for some great shore excursions. As well as orcas and humpback whales, we can also see white-beaked dolphins and porpoises. Fish eagles are also very active at this time of year.
We propose a week's sailing in these magnificent northern fjords, alternating observations at sea, excursions on land, fishing trips and observations of the Northern Lights at night if the sky is clear. An astronomer guide with his telescope and a biologist guide will be on board to assist with the observations and will give talks on cetaceans, the Northern Lights and other fascinating subjects.

Déroulement du séjour

Day 1 : Arrival at Tromso airport and boarding. Welcome and dinner.

Day 2 : Visit of Tromsø, with several very interesting museums and a cable car ride to discover the panorama from the top of the mountain. Set sail in the late afternoon to observe the Northern Lights if conditions are favourable.

Days 3 and 4 : During these 2 days, we'll sail into the fjords to observe the orcas and humpback whales. In recent years, the most favourable fjords have been to the east of Skervøy, in the Kvaenangen region. Killer whales feed in the shoals of fish, especially herring, which have deserted the Lofoten Islands in recent years to spend the winter in these fjords due to climate-related changes in currents and fish shoals. As well as orcas, megapteres or humpback whales are also regular visitors, and their fishing in the swarms of seagulls, gulls and petrels is a wild and unique spectacle.
Evenings on the lookout for the aurora in bays where the view embraces the sky and is far from light pollution.

Day 5 : We sail through the superb scenery of the Lyngen Alps, before discovering Uløya, where a fishing village, far from the tourist routes, has retained its 19th-century appearance with its fisheries, wooden houses, old quays and cod drying sheds. The village of Havnnes on the island of Uløya is one of the few perfectly preserved 19th-century villages still practising traditional cod drying. We visit the village, the fishery and the small museum illustrating life on the island in days gone by, then take a walk along the coastal path where the panorama of the Lyngen peninsula is exceptional. In the afternoon, sail along the cliffs at the tip of Lyngen and disembark at Strupen to get close to a beautiful waterfall and watch the fish eagles. Walk along the seafront to admire the 90-kilometre Lyngen Alps, which rise to an altitude of 1,833 metres. Snowshoe walks to the mountain observatory. Overnight stay in the village.

Day 6 : Stopover on the tiny island of Vorterøya, and walk to discover the view of the Lyngen peninsula from the top of the island. In the evening, we sail to the island of Uløya to spend the night. If conditions are favourable, we'll watch the Northern Lights from the coastal path.

Day 7 : Morning stopover at Finnkroken on the island of Reinøya, followed by a zodiac trip to the islets to observe harbour seals, and cod fishing for enthusiasts.

Day 8 : Disembarkation and return flight.
